ATHLETIC DEFEAT CELTIC FOUR GOALS TO ONE At Victory Square on Saturday it! brilliant sunshine hut on a sticky turf, Athletic defeated Celtic by 4 goals to 1. The teams were : Celtic: Kae, Mills. Coxhill, Guthrie. Alborough, Large, Beveridge, Will, Hurst, .McLaren, McKenzie. Athletic: Hindmarsh, Devereux, McKellar, Lownes, Bunster, May, Richards, Patterson, Strange, Smith.

Athletic turned out with ten men. Coxhill winning the toss, Richard* kicked off to May) who put out a nice pass to Patterson. The latter went off, up the wing and put over a nice centre which was met "by Strange, whose shot went over the bar. • Rae kicked off to Alborough, to McKenzie, who beat Lownds and Devereux and was in the act of shooting when McKellar relieved the pressure. Bunster passed to May, who beat Guthrie and passed to Smith, who put Patterson away on the wing, and he crossed a nice centre right into the goalmouth, Richards running in rushed the ball into the net. 1

Hurst- from the kick passed to McLaren, who beat Lownes and passed to McKenzie, who as lie was tackled by Devereux put over a nice centre to the wing. Beveridge, running in, slammed the ball into the back of the net, nfaking the scores level. This score put Athletic on their mettle, and they were all over Celtic, but the defence of Rae, Mills and Coxhill was hard to break down and Rae saved shots from all angles. Smith beat Guthrie and Mills and ns he was tackled by Coxhill he slipped the ball through to Patterson, who had run inside, and shot a -nice goal. Rae made a great dive' to save, but the speed of the ball beat him. Restarting, Hurst kicked off and passed to Large, who put out to Beveridge, whose centre was weak. Me Kellar kicked to Smith, to May, who put a nice pass dowii the middle to Richards, but Alborough got there first and cleared to Hurst, who broke through and shot on the run. The ball struck the crossbar. Hindmarsh gathered and kicked out to* Bunster. who slipped the ball through to Richards, to Strange. Although he was tackled by Large and Coxhill he got his centre in and in a mik up in the goalmouth Richards kicked the ball into the net. b The play had been very fast up till now, but the sticky nature of the pitch was telling on both sides and frequent mistakes ; were made. Smith and Patterson wete .making a nice .wing' arid often had the defence in trouble, Blit Rae was quite safe and’made some good saves. Athletic had four corners in succession. but could'not get the ball into the net. Coxhill came up now to try and help his forwards and he put a nice pass to Hurst, who shot ..and Hindmarsh made a great save and threw the ball out as Hurst rushed in. Smith put a nice pass out to Patterson, who passed back to Smith, who with an overhead kick;-put the-ball, into the penalty area. It; dropped into the mud arid before either of the Celtic'backs could get to the ball Bunster rushed in and banged the ball into the net as Rae advanced out to try and intercept the shot.. . The final score was: Athletic 4, Celtic 1. . . The referee was Air J. O'.- Patterson. Y.M.C.A. DEFEAT THISTLE

Y.M.C.A. mot Thistle at ..Victory Square on Saturday afternoon and a fast and interesting game was seen. The ground was very slippery in the vicinity of the northern goal, but six of the seven goals were scored at that end, showing the necessity for sure-footed defenders. The teams lined up as follows:--Y.M.C.A. : Kirby, ,C.larke, Smalley, Goodman, Hobern (captain!. Hitchon, Dowling, 0. De Fue, J. De Fue, A. De Fue, Bothwell. Thistle: Webby, Paid, Paterson, Mayers, Cuthbert, Stevens (captain), Crooks, Kenning, Ferguson, McLaren, Sharp. Y.M.C.A. kicked off and even exchanges took place for a time until a well "arranged attack by Y.M.C.A. saw Hobern swing out to Dowling. lie crossed nicely to A. De Fue, who flicked the ball past Paid. J. De Fue following in gave Webby no chance of saving. Y.M.C.A. 1. Thistle 0.

From the kick out Hitclien secured and sent well down to Bothwell, who centred nicely. The De Fue brothers juggled the hall from one to the other, leaving 0. lie Fue a nice opening and lm. made no mistake. Y.M.C.A. 2, Thistle 0. Thistle now pressed hotly and Kirby made two fine saves in quick succession from Ferguson and Kenning. Keeping up the pressure. McLaren sent nicely for goal, but a Y.M.C A. full-back intercepted with • his hand. 1* rom the resultant penalty Ferguson shot wide of the goal. Another attack by Thistle saw Stevens put in a neat shot, the ball rolling along the crossbar and then behind. Heady play by Malloy saw the ball go to Goodman', to 0. De Fue, to A. De Fue, who back-heeled to J. Do Fue. He finished a fine movement- by placing well out ot Webb’s reach. Y.M.C.A. 3, Thistle 0. just after the whistle blew for Half-time. Upon resumption of the game Y.M.C.A. immediately broke through. ,L De Fue sending a fast-shot well wide of Webby. Y.M.C.A. 4, Thistle 0. - A change now came over the game. Thistle played in a determined manner. Kenning received from a mi:< up and placed the ball clear ol Kirby. Thistle 1. Y.M.C.A. 4. Keeping up the pres-

sure Thistle came' again, but excellent defensive play by Clarke and Smalley kept them out’for a time, until Stevens gave to ■ Cuthbert. lie shot high, tlie ball going into the corner of the net. Thistle 2, Y.M.C.A. 4. Y.M.C.A. now made a brief attack upon Thistle goal, where Webby made, two line clearances, assisted by good clearing kicks by Paterson and Paid. Mayers now transferred nicely to Crooks, who put in a gor'd centre which Ferguson secured. . His shot rebounded off Smalley back to Crooks, who had closed in. but- he shot a little too high, thyball skimming, the crossbar- and going behind. Thistle, came again, Stevens sending to McLaren,, to Sharp. He shot on the angle and Kirby slipped on attempting to clear, the* ball going into the. net. Thistle 3. Y.M.C.A. 4. Play now became very exciting. Thistle being all but to obtain ah equaliser, and they were very unfortunate in not doing so. Stevens, received the ball in his own half, pursued his wav with mercurial elusiveness between the players to within three yards of goal and then tapped the ball over the bar to his team's great disappointment. With only two minutes to play, Thistle tried hard, hut Clark proved their stumbling block, leaving the final score Y.M.C.A. 4, Thistle 3. Mr A. E."
