THE POTATO MARKET [By Telegraph—Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, 19th July. Mainly because of a heavy shipment totalling 14,103 sacks taken to the North Island yesterday in the Waipiata, the potato market in Christchurch showed a slight weakening for a day, but this was the first check since the rise set in a fortnight ago. Tilery has been some demand from the north, but in the opinion of some merchants not nearly enough to justify the prices which are reported to have been offered fanners and paid to merchants among themselves. These values, they claim, are entirely fictitious, especially as there are now only two mouths of tlie season left. The market is extremely difficult to judge, because everybody interested in potatoes has a different idea of values and is able to quote instances of actual sales which range over 20s a ton from the highest to the lowest. Sales f.o.b. of Dakotas at more than £9 and of Whites at £8 10s have been reported. In the meantime, while the trade is in an almost hysterical condition over the market, farmers continue to hold oif to what they have. Only .small lots can be bought, because the farmer, having seen potatoes rise about £2 in the last two weeks, is afraid to sell now lest they go still higher. Quotations on trucks have varied. One merchant yesterday quoted £5 15s to £6 5s for Whites and £7 for Dakotas, while another quoted £6 15s to £7 for Whites and £7 to £7 5s for Dakotas. August-Septcmber quotes are up to £8 10s for Whites and £9 10s for Dakotas, f.o.b. LONDON BUTTER MARKET

The butter market in. London is firm, according to the weekly cabled report received on Saturday by the New Zealand Dairy Produce Board, and prices for New Zealand butter show no change. The cheese market is quiet with a slight drop in wholesale values. Wholesale prices for butter are: New Zealand, salted, 89s to 90s a cwt (which equals approximately 10.42 d a lb f.0.b.); unsalted, 945; Australian, 86s to 87s; Danish, spot, 102 s. Wholesale prices for cheese are :—New Zealand, white and coloured, 43s 6d to 445; Australian, 40s to 435; Canadian, 62s to 635: new season’s, 52s to 535. The board has also received the following advice from its agents in Canada; —Butter, Montreal, 20£ cents a lb; New York, 231; cents. The New Zealand Producers’ Cooperaiive Marketing Association’s weekly cabled report from London, dated 19th July, is as follows:—Butter: Market firm with more inquiry. New Zealand, 39s to 90s a cwt; Danish, 102 s. Cheese: Market quiet. New Zealand, white and coloured, 43s 6d a cwt. LONDON WOOL SALES Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, report under date London, 17th instant:—Wool sales continue active.
