DUEL IN AUCKLAND
FOUGHT WITH SWORDS ENGLISH OFFICER AND FOREIGNER (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. A duel with naked swords was. reported to have been fought in Auckland last Friday night. Tile victor in the contest was a former English Army officer who with his sword nicked the upper' arm of his opponent, who thereupon withdrew. The dispute which led to the duel arose in a hotel between the Englishman and a stranger, said to be a foreigner, who made a grossly insulting remark about King George. "The Englishman told him that • lie would not sully his hands by striking him and challenged him to a duel, which the foreigner readily accepted. A duelling ground was found in a room on the top floor of city buildings. Seconds were appointed, and coats and collars, having been removed, the fight began, duelling swords being used. They fought for several minutes. Neither gained an advantage until the Englishman ran his sword through the fleshy part of his antagonist’s arm. Honour being satisfied the contest ended.
