WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT MOTUEKA THE JUNE MEETING At the June meeting of the Women’s Institute 44 members were present. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mrs Tweedy), Mrs G. Mason occupied the chair and after the reading of the ode and the aspiration, extended a hearty welcome to two new members and a visitor from Manakau. The motto for the month was “All the world is a camera; look pleasant please.” The roll call, “A funny incident in my life,” caused much amusement. A motion of sympathy was passed to a. member in her recent bereavement. It was arranged to have a round table conference of members to be held in Bowers’ sample rooms on 15th July to discuss the remits for the forthcoming Dominion conference. An appeal was made for reading matter for the families living at Tilkilka Hill on the road construction work. It was agreed that members help in a pound scheme for the relief of distress, A change has been made in the Institute colours from brown and white to red, green and gold. Thanks were accorded those who had helped to make the. birthday party such a success. Persons desirous of taking advantage of Miss Hazel Johnson’s classes were informed that further particulars could be obtained from the secretary of the Women’s Institute. The lecture to be given by Mrs Moncrieff at the July meeting is being looked forward to with keen pleasure. The competition, something made from an old felt liat, was won by Mrs T. Manifold, with Mrs Morrison second. Community singing was enjoyed by all. Mesdames Brough, Fry (2), Cooper (2) and Goodyer dispensed afternoon tea. The singing of the National Anthem brought to an end a happy afternoon. RICHMOND MEETING This month the Richmond Women’s Institute meeting was quite well attended although the weather was bad. During the afternoon the forthcoming concert to he given in conjunction with the Hope-Ranzau Women’s Institute was discussed, it being decided to hold it in the first week in August, and that it be given entirely by the members. After tea Mrs W. Hill demonstrated to the members the art of making flawed pastry, all members gaining some very useful knowledge. Miss Worley, of Hope, then talked on the subject of “women’s work in the world,” which was most enlightening and interesting. The competition for the best article from a yard of cretonne, and the best knitted article for a baby, were won by Mrs Fitall (first), Mrs May (second), and Mrs Wilkes (first) and Mrs Chittenden (second).
