UNSUCCESSFUL?

MR LYONS AS MEDIATOR LONDON, 20th Juno. It is understood that Mr Lyons during his visit to Ireland and also in conversations with the Free State High Commissioner, Mr Dulanty, endeavoured- to reconcile Mr de Valera to Great Britain. It appears, however, . that like General Smuts, of South Africa, and Mr Haveuga. the South African Finance Minister, he failed. Mr Lyons, who was on t,h e friendliest relations with Mr de Valera, and was cordial with Mr Dulanty, acted spontaneously, and purely in a .personal capacity, without previous official contacts or inspiration. When he reported to Mr Thomas, the Dominions’ Minister was actually displeased at Mr Lyons’ attempted intervention, and expressed the opinion that tlie problem rested with him.
