LIVE STOCK

BLENHEIM SALE Owing, probably, to the fact that last week’s big auction caused an over-sup-ply amongst buyers, the bidding at Wednesday’s stock sale at the Blenheim yards lacked spirit, and passings were numerous, reports the “Express”. Prices for wethers showed a further decline by about sixpence, while those for • ewes wei'e on about a par . with last week. The general quality of the yarding, however, was not quite up to the- usual standard, and this, no doubt, was one of the reasons for the decline. The size of the offering in the fat department showed a big drop in comparison with last week, when just over 1100 were penned, as against 500 yesterday. The entry of 600 stores was on a level with that of last auction.

Ewes comprised just over half the fat yarding, and the quality and inquiry showed little difference from last sale. Top price went for a pen of 13 good quality sheep brought in from Cape Campbell, for which 15s 8d was paid. Another attractive line which solicited good inquiry was a draft of 57 prime sorts from the J. Glover estate. For these 15s I<T, 14s lid, 14s, and. 13s 9d were, the prices paid. A week, ago the top. price was 15s 9d. Wethers were well represented, but the quality was only avemge and a co.rfresponding drop in prices resulted. Another satisfactory figure was paid for nine prime sorts, which were knocked down at 19s lOd. Other handy prices were 18s, 17s lOd, 17s 3d,, and dowp to 14s for “lights.” Several pens wei’e passed in at round about 17s 9d and 17s. A week ago, the top prices were 19s. 3d, 19s 2d, and 18s lid, down to 15s 3d. Three pens containing a total of 14 lambs were offered, for which 15s, 15s, and 14s were the prices paid, .as against 17s Id, 15s fid and 14s 9d last week. In the store section prices remained about the same as those ruling at last sale, while the bidding was not up to its usual standard. Sound and failing mouth ewes appeared in strong force, and top price of 15s went for a draft of 63 good quality sound mouths, running with English Leicester rams, while other handy price's were 14s lOd and 14s 7d. An attractive line containing 33 well finished three-quarterbred. ewe hoggets, which were the feature of the section, were passed oyer at 17s 9d, while another draft of haltbred wethers fetched 13s.
