Kelly Petillo, a Los Angeles driver won the Memorial Day five hundred mil» automobile' race in. 4 hours 36 minutes 47 seconds, at an average of 102.24 miles an hour Petillo broke the record at 450 miles in 4 hours 7 minutes 15 seconds, averaging 109.201 miles an hour, hut raia forced him to slow down from then on. Thirty-three drivers started. Clay Weatherly of Cincinatti' was killed and his mechanic sustained a broken back' early when the car crashed into a retaining wall. There were 155,000 spectators.
