Ah Auckland fruit firm sent a cablegram to its agents in Rarotonga in code, hut owing to in transmission the words “Will pay market rate 7s 8d” appeared in tho message as receipted by the agent. 1 lie consequence was that the price of bananas was forced up by 2s per case in all the fruit shipped. Ihe firm said the department had no intention of recompensating it in any wav for its financial loss, me Chief Postmaster had expressel regret and said suitable action was being taken with the officer who was at fault. A refund of the transmission charges had been authorised, hut the Department was absolved by law from claims arising out of errors. . Members of the chamber agreed that the only remedy the firm hail was to petition the Minister, and failing that, to ventilate the matter in Parliament. It was a serious matter for the firm to lose several hundred pounds through such I an error.
