PUBLIC MEETING
INTEREST AT MOUTERE ADDRESSES BY TEN LOCAL BODY CANDIDATES A public meeting to discuss matters in connection with the forthcoming local elections, convened by the Moutere branch of the Farmers’ Union, was held in the Upper Moutere Hall. Mr M. G. Cresweil, president, being voted to the chair, first called on Councillor Teoce, who said tliai since being elected to the Council the Council bad been successful in obtaining grants for- Bosselmann’s creek bridge and a metalling contract at Mahana, and both works being finished were very beneficial to, those concerned. In mentioning that a ratepayer had been prosecuted for failing to clear his road irontage of noxious weeds be warned others that further proceedings would be taken, as in the Engineer’s opinion the Moutere riding was the worst in the county for noxious weeds encroaching on the. roads.
Councillor Corder gave particulars of file proposed loan for tar sealing, stating that the £48,000 was required for the work, but the Highways Board was finding £36,000, leaving tile Council to raise £12,000. This amount is to cover all work in preparation for tar-sealing, including widening where necessary. When asked if any provision would be made for horse traffic over the Moutere hills, Councillor Corder replied that he did not think horses would have any trouble in negotiating the hill on the tar-sealihg. Messrs A. E. Lindup and O. D. C. Eggevs, candidates for the seat on the Council for the Moutere riding, briefly addressed the meeting. Mr 11. E. Everett, chairman of the Waimea Power Board, gave a short resume of the board’s activities leading up to the offer now before them of the Hume Pipe Company to supply electrical energy from the Cobb Valley. Asked why lhe Upper Moutere district was not included in the Brooklyn scheme Mr Everett replied that there was only a limited supply from that source, and as Riwaka and Tasman had first made application they were civen first consideration.
Messrs J. Dicker,'Harry Everett and H. E. Stephens, candidates for the Power Board, and Messrs D. Haining and C. H. Mackav, candidates for the Motueka Harbour Board, also gave short addresses.
