From the “Mail”, March 20th, 1885

A meeting of the Star Football Club was held last night, Mr Barker ,in tlie chair, when 35 members were present. The minutes of lhe previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the election of officers took place with the following results :—Captain, Mr Barnett; secretary, Mr W. Mills; committee, Alessfs Barker. Capper, Chamberlain, Carter, and Lipscombe. It was agreed after some discussion, to take over the Oddfellows Hall as a gymnasium in connection with the Club. The Club has 52 members on the roll. The “Maiden Fours” was won by the Nelson crew against the Star Boating Club. The following is the account given by the “Post.” Maiden Fours (unrigged gigs: string tests) Distance 1 mile. Prize £8 Nelson n awing Club —F. Oldhiim (bow). C. S. Emerson No. 2; E. 'H. Deck No. 3; E. B. Alabin, stroke; E. Lowe cox. Star Boating Club: F. Barraud, bow; J. K. 1-1 nine No. 2; J. A. Thompson No. 3; J. E. Smith, stroke; A. Johnston COX. The result of this race caused a gobd deal of surprise. Wellington went away from the starting point at a - good swinging pace, and on passing Oriental Bav was several lengths ahead of Nelson. C-ouing up to the ’Be Aro Baths, the visitors crept, up, and before the gasworks were reached they were slightly ahead. Nelson era dually forged ahead and passed the judge’s boat Msecs before Wellington.
