MODEL HOUSEMAID
ENTICED AWAY BY NEIGHBOUR DAMAGES AWARDED (UnitHQ Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 21st February, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, 20tli February. Edith Savjlle was a model housemaid, and when, she left'the employment of Herbert Stretch for the home of a neighbour, Alexander Sim, both living at Cookham Dean, the former sued the latter for damages for enticing her away. Counsel for the defence described it as the most frumpery charge for fifty years. Counsel for plaintiff quoted the Tenth Commandment (“Thou shali not covet . . . .”). A King’s Bench jury returned a verdict for £25 damages and costs on the enticement charge and £250 damages for alleged libel contained in a telegram Sims sent to Stretch asking him to dispatch Edith Saville’s clothing and money owing to her. The costs will probably be in the vicinity of £4OO, so the Sims family’s coveting of Edith Saville’s model work cost nearly £7OO. Edith Saville gave evidence on behalf of plaintiff, with whom she smilingly left the court.
