ANGLING PROSPECTS
(To the Editor) Sir, —I wish to endorse Mr E. W. Sykes’s remarks re shags. While fishing the rivers in the Nelson district again this year. 1 have noticed how the shags have inci eased on all the rivers, and the trout are not as plentiful. You do not see the small fish in any of tho rivers as in past years.—l am. etc., ■ANGLER, 18th February. (To the Editor) Sir, —I was an interested reader of Mr F. W. Sykes's letter of the 15th inst. I have spent several days fishing . in tlie following rivers: Motneka, Pokororo, Motupiko, Appleby. Wangapeka, Lake Rotoiti, with several other angjers, and we have all remarked on the number of shags on these rivers, and in several instances have found trout oil the banks of the rivers with only skin ami bone left. . It appeal’s to me that the -hag is a far greater danger to this sport than any other poacher. 1 may state that 1 have seen shags in other districts catch quite largo flounders, double them up and then swallow them. I am one who would like to see the shags destroyed in the Nelson district. —I am, etc., ANGLER. 18th February.
