OBITUARY

MRS ANN JANE WILKIE The death occurred recently of Mrs Ann Jane Wilkie, who was a daughter of the late Mr W. Page, one of the pioneers of the Takaka district. Deceased’s father arrived in Nelson in the ship Bolton on loth March, 1842, and resided with his parents in the Maitai Valley until 1853 when lie went to Takaka. Born in Takaka. in 1857, Mrs Wilkie married the late Mr A. Wilkie on oth June, 1894, and came to reside in Nelson where her husband had a butchery business. In 1896 they removed to Murchison but returned to the City in 1908.

The late Mrs Wilkie was a keen church worker at All Saints’ and at the Port Mission Hall, and being of a generous and sympathetic nature there are many who will have cause to remember kindly actions at her hands. There were no children of the marriage. Mrs W. R. Reilly (Takaka), and Mrs 11. Goodwin (Nelson) are sisters of deceased, the brothers being Messrs Janies, Charles, Harry and Wallace Page (all of Takaka), and Mr Fred Page (Brightwater). MR CHARLES F. J. GOULTER (By Telegraph—Press Association) BLENHEIM, Tins Day. The death has occurred of Mr Charles Francis Joseph Coulter, the doyen of New Zealand sheepbreeders, in his 81st year. Born at Nelson, the son of the late Cyrus Coulter and Anne Redwood, sister of the late Archbishop Redwood. With his partner lie forced the famous Hawkesbury, Murray and Tasmanian Merino strains, and evolved the equally famous bulldog Merino strain later. In 1870 Mr Goulter established the llawkesbury Jersey breed of dairy cattle, importing the famous Soumise Lady and Soumise Majesty. He also bred Shetland ponies, thoroughbred horses (Clydesdales), English setter dogs and English game fowl. The late Mr Goulter is survived by a widow, four sons and seven daughters.
