NELSON BOARD BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING ,SCHOOL SITES AND ADDITIONS The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board held yesterday was attended by the Hon. \V. H. Mclntyre (chairman), .Messrs J. H. Harkness, \V. Baigeul. E. Carling, F. V. Knapp, J. G. Wilkens, and E. J. Scantlebury. Accounts amounting to £11,210 were passed for payment. The Education Department wrote in reply to the board’s application for a grant towards the cost of a. residence at Birchfield, stating that the matter would be held over until it was ascertained what money would be available for such expenditure. The secretary reported that a. school at Golden Downs had been opened. The Forestry Department had. provided a building on a nic„ site. There were 14 children in the area, 7 of school age. The secretary’s action in regard to file matter was endorsed. Tile chairman reported that he had selected a new site for the school at Kougaiiu and he would see t lie Minister on the matter. FJe was hopeful that the removal of the school would soon be accomplished. Residents had offered to dear t.lie site. The matter would be submitted for the Minister's approval. The matter of the installation of a hot water service and a bathroom at file Lower Aloutere residence was referred to the foi'emah of works for another report. A request for improved ventilation in the infant room at Motupipi was referred 'u the foreman of works for report. Airs B. Wade, Reefton, offered to sell her property for addition to the school site. If was decided to reply that the board did not require the property. The Education Department wrote in reply to an application for a grant for rebuilding the Waimangaroa residence stating that the matter would be considered when funds were available. Tire Chairman is to interview the Minister. The School Commissioner at Wangapeka requested additional accommodation. It was decided that the following matters lie submitted: Extensions to the Maggie Creek, Wangamoa,' and Wangapeka scnocls ; new residences at Waimangaroa and Birchill: the removal and re-erection of Kongaliu school, improvements to the Motupipi infants room, and an investigation of the group of school buildings at Motueka. The group of buildings at Motueka was described as abominable, and mem■Jjf.rs agreed that the matter should lie gone into to see if some arrangement could be made whereby a new school could be obtained. The Auckland Point CommiUeo expressed appreciation of improvements carried out at the school. It was decided that the bank at the back of the Auckland Point school be attended to. The Clifton Terrace Committee asked for a gram, towards the cost of ground improvements in the form of a rock garden. It was decided that the bond had no funds i'or the nurpose mentioned. The Denniston committee was granted £5 towards the cost of ground improvements. The Nelson Central Committee wrote expressing appreciation of the renovations effected at the school. The Motueku Committee was granted £l2 16s 6d towards general work. The Redwood’s Valley Committee was granted permission to erect a car shod on the school grounds. Air Scantlebury and the secretary reported on the matter of renewing gates at the Richmond School. Tile hoard decided that it would take no action in the renewal of one double gateway, but would offer uo objection to the committee undertaking the work. It was decided that new sanitary conveniences be erected at ihe Wai-iti residence. Tile Mahana Committee was granted £2 18s 6d towards a side door entrance to the school. Application by the Tahumuiui Committee for a tank stand and other work was held over pending the receipt of further details. VACANCY ON BOARD It was reported that nominations for the vacancy on the board caused by ihe death of Mr H. Wood closed oil the 26th February. Tlic Education Department approved of an additional trainee for the Training College, making Ihe total from Nelson, 17. A request was made for flic, reopening of ihe, school at Kairaru. The chairman is to interview the Minister of Ed oration on the matter. The Karamea Committee asked for the board’s support in an application for the erection of a footbridge over the main highway. The chairman pointed out that the Karamea river was filling up at the mouth as a- result of the river bringing down material removed bv the earthquake. He feared to think what would happen if Karamea had a flood similar !o that of 19M. Karamea was now an island owing to the splitting of the’ river and the water ran across the. roadway frequently making il difficult for Ihe children to pass. had not. been a real Hood. It was decided, that a letter he forwarded to the Public Works Committee supporting the committee’s request. A complaint was received from Kotinga regarding Ilia parking of cars on the plugrouud. It was decided if the board’s by-law in respect (o car parking on school grounds was not observed, the board would prosecute ihe offenders. DENIAL CLINIC The Nelson Dental Clinic committee wrote asking for a reduction in the annual rental charge for the room used by (he committee. Mr Knapp, who is chairman of file committee, said the committee had difficulty in obtaining the necessary finance. There were a large number of unemployed in the city who could not find the money and the committee found itself ill arrears. The clinic authorities had now reduced the number of children treated by excluding standards 3 and 4 but with only the primers and standards 1 and 2, there were still 500 on the Nelson roll. Air Carling considered the control of the clinics should be in the hands of tile Education Boards. At present ihe whole system was wrong. The chairman said it was a reflection on a place like Nelson if it could not. support a dental nurse lor the school children. He suggested that an effort be made to provide a. portable clinic so that the children could be treated at the schools. This would save the time taken in walking to and from the clinic in the town. Air Knapp pointed out that if a portable clinic was obtained the Department had so many requirements to be fulfilled, that nothing less than a palace was required. It was decided to request the committee to present proposals for the provision of suitable rooms at the schools, and that the chairman interview the Alinister on the matter. The Methodist Young Women’s Bible Class Union was granted ihe use of the Wakefield School for its Easter camp. The following resignations were received : Air A. .C. Barr,, assistant teacher, Auckland Point; Aliss M. E. Cameron, assistant teacher, Wai-uta; Airs I. Q. Robinson, sole teacher,, Nuggety Creek ; Aliss E. T. Siebert, assistant teacher, Motueka; Airs R. J. Simpson, Education Office. Aliss Kezia. I. Wills, 8.A., Cronadmi, was appointed assistant mistress at the Nelson Central. The appointment of Mr G. .AY. P. Alitehell to Inangaluia Junction was confirmed.
