HAUPTMANN’S DEATH SENTENCE
APPEAL TO BE MADE FUND TO BE RAISED (United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright) FLEMINGTON, 14th February. Mr Reilly, counsel for Hauptmann, who spent ten minutes with Hauptmann in his cell to-day, stated that the prisoner, who is engrossed in plans for the fight to be made to extend liis life beyond the week' beginning ISth. March “is pretty well broken up by his sentence. Hauptmann is still convinced of his innocence and is visibly shaken. He says, ‘How could anybody believe that I, a father, the father of a child like my little Mannfried, could kill anyone else’s baby?”’ Mr Reilly indicated that the attorneys were prepared to exhaust every last measure of the law to set aside the verdict. A world-wide appeal for new evidence would be broadcast, and a “Hauptmann Appeal Fund” that could receive contributions from all sources, would be established under the trusteeship of some hank.
