AMATEUR ATHLETICS

FORMATION OF CLUB IN NELSON MEETING OF ALL INTERESTED TO-NIGHT In ancient Greece gymnastics and athletics were regarded as of fundamental importance in their national activities, for the Greek idea- held that the discipline and development of the body should be not onlv the first aim of education but the main purpose of life. But to-day we with our so-called advanced ideas are inclined not to give to athletics the place they warrant in the development and perfection of the physique of our race quite apart from the sheer pleasure and exhilarating joy to be obtained from contests in field, track and hurdles Now that an effort is being made to revive amateur athletics and cycling in Nelson it is honed that all competitors and followers of both cycling and athletics will give their whole-heart-ed and keen support to the movement afoot. The fact that a recent evening meeting at the Park produced 50 entries from Nelson alone, and . that some 30 odd actual competitors unanimously endorsed the proposal to form a club forthwith, should in itself be a sufficient mandate to both. the public and the sponsors of the movement to go ahead with athletic sports in Nelson. For this purpose a general public meeting is being held in the Institute at 8 o’clock this evening when it is hoped all interested will be present.
