WILDING SHIELD MATCHES WIN FOR CANTERBURY (By Telegraph--Preaa Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Canterbury won the Wilding Shield from Wellington by seven matches to five, and 17 sets to 14. Although there was a tricky north wind blowing the conditions generally were belter yesterday and the standard of play was very much higher. Canterbury fully deserved its win. This makes Canterbury’s sixth win of the Shield. Wellington has also won it six times. Following are the detailed results, Wellington players first: Singles.—D. G. France lost to C’. Aligns 5-7, 6-2, 5-7. N. Smith lost to H. A. Barnett 4-6, 1-6. R. McL. Ferkins lost to T. Rhodes-Williams 6-8, 6-3, 3-6. N. Bedford beat H. Dymond 6-8, 6-2, 9-7. Doubles.—France and Smith lost to Aligns and Barnett 8-6, 4-6. 4-6. Ferkins and Bedford beat Rhodes-Williams and Dymond 7-5. 7-5. VISITORS ARRIVE PERRY NONCOMMITTAL AUCKLAND, This Day. Except that he mentioned that he was glad to be hack in New Zealand and that he was looking forward to the New Zealand championship tournament F. J. Perry, the world tennis champion, had ,nothing to say about bis movements when he arrived at Auckland from Sydney. On professionalism, film contracts and his future plans Perry was quietly bint firmly silent to all questions. He gave the same answer. “I am glad to he back in New Zealand and I am looking forward to an enjoyable trip.” Three Victorian tennis stars, R. W. Ewin, A. A. Kay and Miss Shirley Whittaker, arrived with Perry to take part in th e national championships. WAIPAWA TOURNEY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS HASTINGS, 21st January. Ideal weather prevailed at Waipawa at the week-end, when the championship events in the North Island tennis tournament were concluded. There was a big crowd of spectators for the finals, in which a high standard of play was witnessed. Coombe beat Roussell for the men’s singles title, tho match going to four sets. Miss Nicholls beat Miss Howe in the women’s singles final. Charters arid Roussell took the men’s doubles from Coombe and Pearce in astrenuous match. In the women’s doubles Misses Nicholls and Howe beat Mrs Adams and Miss Gould. •Charters and Miss Nicholls defeated Dyer and Miss Macnssey in the combined doubles. W. Hooper took the schoolboy’s singles title from bis brother, S. Hooper, after a strenuous and closely-contested fight.
