OBITUARY
MR W. RUDDENKLAU (By Telegraph—Press Association) ASHBURTON, 7th January. The death has occurred of Mr Frederick William Ruddenklau, aged 66, a prominent landowner in the Methven and Cust districts. He was chairman of the Mount Hutt Road Board, Methven, since 1927, and a director of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative of Canterbury. He leaves a widow, four adult sons, and two daughters. SIR ALFRED EWING (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 7th January. The death has occurred of Sir Alfred Ewing. Sir Alfred Ewing was ex-Principal of the University of Edinburgh. He was a native of Dundee and a graduate of Edinburgh University. He was professor of Mechanical Engineering in Toldo University before returning to Dundee as Professor of Engineering. From 1890 to 1903 he was Professor of Mechanism and Applied Mechanics at Cambridge University. Since 1903 he had been Director of Naval Education. He was appointed in May, 1916, to succeed the late Sir W. Turner at Edinburgh University, his principalship' commencing in October. He was knighted in 1911. The late Sir Alfred was an authority on cyphers, and did good service in the war. He was President of the British Association in 1932.
