RISE OF MISS D. ROUND Miss D. Round, who is at present playing in New Zealand, a few years ago was spoken of as a girl of great promise. She had beaten Senorita de Alvarez at Wimbledon, and reached the fifth round of the championships; she bad represented Britain in the Wightman Cup against America, reached the final of the U.S.A. doubles, and was ranked No. 4on the British list. And in a list of the world’s first ten in. which she was not included a footnote says: ‘’Miss Dorothv Round has all the strokes for a rapid advance ” In two years she had outstripped all her competitors, and is now ranked No. 1 in the world 1 Photographs of her ir action show that she can smash like a man with both feet off the ground, and her play nt'Wimblo don has merited the following appreciation • "For sheer beauty of stroke, whether ground stroke, servo, or volley, Miss Round is to-day perhaps unequalled. She was faced by one of the most gallant-hearted players in the game whose forehand punch, founded on nimble footwork, never gives her opponent any rest. Fortunately for herself Miss Round had no weakness, and her own powerful game brought victory.” Again: ‘'Meantime Miss Dorothy Round was swinging her long classic drives at the backhand of Switzerland’s No. 1 player, who did not thrive under the bombardment. Miss Round sped about the court with the speed of a boy, and her retrieving powers took the edge off the other’s game.” It is said that Miss Round never defends —she is always attacking.
