OBITUARY

MR J. A. LAMBERT OF MARL BOROUGH

Mr John Allison Lambert, J.P., whose death lias occurred at his homestead, Shrublands, Kaituna, was one of Marlborough’s best known public men something over a quarter of a century ago, says- the' “Express.” He had a wide range of interests, and his record of local body service' was a conspicuous one. The deceased, who was 89 years of age, was born at Marrick,' Yorkshire, England. He married in 1867 Miss Annie Waistell, of East Layton, ' Yorkshire, and a fortnight after their wedding the young couple set out to make a home for themselves hr Now Zealand, sailing on the ship England (Captain Fox). They landed at Port Chalmers, and after three months in the south came to Marlborough, settling at Grovetown, then known as Big Bush, in 1868. After a short while Mr Lambert took up a small property in the Onamalutu valley, but about 1870 he acquired the Shrublands farm, where he had resided for some 64 years. One of his proudest recollections in connection with educational matters was the fact that ho acted as supervisor of the examination when Lord Rutherford, the eminent scientist, then a pupil at the Havelock School, won the Tinline Scholarship which took him to Nelson College and inaugurated the brilliant career which awaited him. With the approval of the Government he prepared a comprehensive exhibit of New Zealand wools which was sent to Wembley Exhibition; after the Exhibition Mr Lambert pretented the exhibit to his native country, Yorkshire; There are two sons, Messrs J. A. Lambert, of Renwick and T. R. Lambert, of Kaituna, and two daughters, Mrs P. Storey and Mrs F. Scott, both of Kaituna, while there aro twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grand-children. The interment took place at the Kaituna Cemetery on Labour Day, the Veil. Archdeacon 0. J. Kimberley officiating at the graveside. Messrs W. Maher, D. and J. Anderson, A. 11. Nees, A. Barton and R. Davis were the pallbearers.
