CARRIERS’ REQUEST
DECLIND BY LICENSING AUTHORITY (By Telegraph—Prosfl AsHocintlon) WANGANUI, 20th September. The No. f> District Licensing Authority sat at Wanganui to-day for the purpose of delivering decisions which were reserved at the last sitting. The matter was of importance in that the authority had been asked to refuse the renewal of several goods licences to carrying firms operating on through runs from Wellington to Wanganui and New Plymouth. Local carriers between ' Wanganui and New Plymouth had opposed the firms operating on the through route, contending that the truck rate system introduced by the railways in conjunction with tlie local carriers adequately served the district. The decision of the authority was that the licences applied for should be renewed. It was contended that the present truck rate system was unworkable, as at present a minimum of 10 trucks a week was required by tlie railway. Ttlie authority stated’ that it had given careful consideration to tlie petitions of th e carriers along the route opposing the renewal of licences, hut could not accede to the requests therein.
