BLUFF THAT FAILED

ATTEMPT TO BREAK GAOL DILLINGER’S HENCHMEN (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, 22nd September, A message from Columbus (Ohio) states that Charles Makley ancl Harry Pierpoint, two members of the Dillinger’s gang, awaiting the execution of the death sentence at Ohio state penitentiary, were thwarted in a bold attempt to escape to-day. Makley was shot and killed, and Pierpoint was seriously injured by the guards’ riot guns. Attempting to copy the “wooden gun” tactics of Dillinger, who used such a device to escape from Crown Point gaol on the 2nd March, they made imitation revolvers out of soap and attempted to bluff their way out of the death cells. The guards however, were prepared for such a ruse and quickly halted their attempt to break gaol.
