Twenty thousand ex-soldiers of the Allied and enemy armies, including 400 British, of which nine are holders of the Victoria Cross, knelt in the vast esplanade before the statue of the Blessed Virgin while the Archbishop of Birmingham said mass for the millions of war dead on the occasion of the international pilgrimage praying for peace. It' is expected that another 30,000 will arrive to-morrow. Many pilgrimages are bringing men still suffering from war wounds.
