SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL McCarthy challenge cup Y.M.C.A. (CHALLENGERS) DEFEAT CELTIC 4 TO 1 In perfect weather on a dry ground, Y.M.C.A. (challengers) defeated Celtic for the McCarthy Cup oh Saturday afternoon by 4 goals to 1. 'Celtic' were unfortunate ill being two men short, the handicap proving too much for them. The Celtic defence played well, Clark and Coxhill a s fullbacks, being a tower of strength, while the remainder of the team played well, but Y.M.C.A. appeared" to have the game well in hand throughout. Y.M.C.A. will now hold the trophy for the 1934 season. DETAILS of play Y.M.C.A. won the toss and took advantage of a fairly - stiff northerly breeze. The teams were As follows: — Celtic: Rae, Clark. Coxhill, Livingstone, Mackie, Hurst, Campbell, Devereaux, Rymell. Y.M.C.A. : Kirby, Alexander, Smalley, Hobern, Bunster, Black, 0. Du Fue, J. De Fue, F. De Fue, A. De Fue, Ellwood Celtic kicked off, Devereux passing to Hurst, who was playing left half, also with the forwards. Y.M.C.A. soon attacked Ellwood centring to F. De Fue, who headed to J. De Fue, the latter, meeting the ball with a. lovely first time shot which gave Rae no chance. Y.M.C.A. 1, Celtic 0. Y M CA. continued the attack, and the Ceitic defence was kept busy. Celtic broke away occasionally but never appeared really dangerous, as the Y.M.C A. defence, with only three forwards to stop, had a fairly easy time. Y.M.CA.’s second goal was rather IdckyJ De Fue shot, and Rae stopped the ball well, but was hemmed in and attempted to throw it round the post. It hit Coxhill and rebounded, and with the aid of the wind found the net, makiu<r Y.M.C.A. two goals. The third goal came shortly after, the ball going from Ellwood to A. De Fue to F. De Kue. who netted well out of Hue s reach. Y.M.C.A. 3, Celtic 0. Half-time came with no alteration to the'scores. Y.M.C.A. had kept the Celtic defence busy, every man playing very well. , T?he second half was more evenly contested, as Celtic were aided by the breeze, but Y.M.C.A. added the next goal by clever work from the De hue brothers. 0. De Fue placed a- corner nicely to J. De Fue who headed the ball to F. De Fue, who netted with a neat header. Y.M.C.A. 4, Qeltic 0.
