DEFENCE OF PACIFIC SIR M. HANKEY’S MISSION LONDON, 6th September. Tlie “Sun” news service says it understands that Anglo-Japanese relations will be one of the chief subjects which Sir Maurice Hankey, Secretary of the Imperial Defence Committee, will discuss in Australia. Sir Maurice takes no specific brief oil the subject, but the British Government and the Imperial Defence Committee are anxious to have a clear understanding on the Empire’s policy, not merely in readiness for the 1935 naval conference, but also in view of the great changes which have recently occurred in tlie Far East. There seems to be no question at present of reviving the Anglo-Japanese allegiance, but Britain desires a gesture of Anglo-Japanese understandjng, and considers that there must be a rapprochement, in spirit if not in name.
