TOBACCO FARMING SCHEME
LABOUR DEPARTMENT’S SUPPORT EXTENDED
Further assistance will be given by the Labour Department to the tobaccofarming venture being conducted at N,ew Brighton by returned soldiers, according to a letter received by the Returned Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment Committee (says the Christchurc 1 “Press”). The letter stated ,that relief labour would be made available under the No. 5 scheme, and that the position would be reviewed after this season’s crop had been harvested, lhe chairman, Mr E. F. Willcox, remarked that it was very satisfactory that the department had decided to grant further help, and so enable' the venture to go Present, at the meeting were Mr Willcox, Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, Colonel J. Murphy, and Mr'W. E. Leadley (secretary). Mr Leadley reported that the receipts at the stall at the Winter Show had been slightly less than last year. If was decided to send letters of appreciation to Mrs E. F. Willcox, Mrs W. M. Lawry, Mrs V. C. Peters, Miss Orchard, and Miss Fiddis for their help with the stall, and also a cheque for £3 3s to the Winter Show authorities as a mark of appreciation for the free space provided for the stall, in. the last three years.
