THEFT CHARGES
COUNTY COUNCIL EMPLOYEES REMANDED

In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Cecil Lawrence Gilbertson, aged 32, formerly a clerk in the employ of the Southland County Council, appeared on remand on 28 charges of theft and forgery. After evidence lasting for the greater part of the day had been taken, the Magistrate suggested that in view of other charges in which Gilbertson is jointly involved, and which will be taken on Wednesday, no plea should yet be entered.
Mr Eustace Russell, who represented the accused, concurred, and the case was held over till Wednesday, bail again being fixed at .£IOO. Charles Martin Todd, also a former employee of the council, appeared on remand charged with the theft of £52 19s 2d from the council, and was further remanded till Wednesday. There were 14 counts against Gilbertson of theft as a. servant of the council, the total amount involved being £l6 I.ls 9d, and there were 14 charges of forging pay sheets in respect of eacli amount, it- being alleged that the name °f A. E. Dowdall was used on . the sheets with intent that the signature be acted upon as if it were genuine.
