NELSON UNION management committee MEETING At the meeting of the Rugby Union Management Committee bold in Cole's rooms last evening there mere present Messrs R. J. Eyre (president, in the chair), R. Brownlie, F. J. Rotter (vicepresidents) R. Freeman (Pirates), W. Shain (Nelson), I. Wyber (Referees), If. Silcock (Schools), F. J. Lock (Treasurer), T. Austin (Rival), IL McPherson (Rover), D. Fowler (Waimea), H. Williams (Regimental) and I). D. Merritt (Secretary). The secretary reported that although the headmasters had decided against charging the hoys for the schools* tournament, they had acquiesced to the Union’s wishes. The Committee approved the secretary’s action in congratulating Marlborough on winning the Seddon Shield and explaining that Nelson was unable to play there on 25th August, but could play after Bth September, j The Bush Union thanked the local j Union for hospitality accorded its team during their recent tour, and ex- ] pressed the hope that they would be able to renew acquaintances in a few years’ time. Station 2ZR asked for support ; m its request to the Marlborough Union for permission to relay the Seddon Shield match between Nelson and Marlborough. The Union agreed to support the request, it being pointed out that the “gate” would not be affected, and there was a largo number of the public interested who would be unable to attend the game. The New Zealand Rugby Union advised that it could not arrange a match for the New Zealand team against the Seddon Shield districts. In regard to the match against West Coast next Saturday the gate receipts are to bo shared 50-50. It was agreed to accept a local (West Coast) -referee. The Waimea club explained that the third class team was unable to travel j on the date arranged, and asked per-1 mission to travel on 25tli August, j which was granted. The club also re- j gretted that they were unable to field | a third class team on Saturday - as j some members were unable to get in, from the back country. i
Permission was granted the Waimea senior team to withdraw, as > they found difficulty in fielding a team. It, was decided to ask the City Council for the use of the Park on 15tli September, and if Nelson won the Seddon Shield they would require to play here on the 22nd. Mr McPherson was appointed manager of the Nelson junior repi’esentative team on Saturday, and Mr Silcock of the visiting Marlborough juniors. The banks were granted the use of the Park on 6th September. Final gate arrangements were made for the combined football and hockey fixtures at the Park next Saturday. Tlie chairman reported that all was going well in connection with the Primary Schools Tournament and all the boys had arrived. It was decided that the Council! be asked to remit 15 per cent of the takings at the tournament. Mr Shain explained that through the generosity of sporting citizens jerseys and socks had been provided for the Nelson schoolboys taking part. The Union will conclude the tourney on Friday by entertaining all the members of the teams at afternoon tea. It was explained that people who are billeting boys may get complimentary tickets. X The junior representatives will train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Mr J. Byrne is to be asked to coach the team. Mr Potter moved that the Union wish the touring team good luck.
They could be assured that under the manager appointed (Mr Freeman) the team would come back having played the game on and off the field. Mr Shain and the chairman supported the motion which was carried.
