ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

WESTLAND 7, NELSON S The ground at Victory Square was very heavy on Saturday, when Westland defeated Nelson in the first representative game of the present season. The weather kept fine and a large number of spectators were treated to a really fine exhibition of football. Westland indulged in the short passing game and some very pretty movements were executed by the forwards, the three halfbacks assisting in the attack when opportunity offered, and showing stubborn defence with nice clean tackling. The full backs, J. Aims and Caldwell did not appear over confident at the commencement of the game but soon settled down to play tho game with real good understanding. R. Aims iu goal was also very neat in all his work, and although five goals were scored against Westland, the goalkeeper did not have a chance of saving either of them, as every goal was scored well out of his reach. The Nelson side did very well to play their mor© experienced opponents to so close a score. Kenning gave a fine display in goal for Nelson, while Alexander and Clarke were very sound as fullbacks, with probably a little too much work placed on Alexander owing to Nelson’s right half, Heath, playing too near his forwards .and not marking Westland’s left wing. Hobern played well at centre-half but is no doubt much better suited to the right half position, in which position li c has been playing for Y.M.C.A. in a very capable manner. May kept iu close attendance on Sliolton, Westland’s right winger, and spoilt some very promising moves, by Sliolton and McNaughton. With a little more ■weight and experience May should make a really good boy. The four Du Fue boys played their usual attractive games, especially in the second half when A. Du Fue changed places with Bothwell and came to inside left. The four boys played some fine passing movements, showing fine combination, and some really nice touches while each boy is capable of sending in the ball with plenty of sting. Bothwell was certainly a trier at all stages of the game, but no doubt is in need of experience in the round ball game. In a curtain raiser Thistle defeated Athletic by 5-0. A very pleasing dance was held in Die Waverley Hall o n Saturday night in honour of the visiting Westland team when /a large gathering was present.

There will be no Association Football matches played on Saturday 25th August on the occasion of the visit of the Australian Hockey team.
