HAWKES BAY SUPERIOR TO WELLINGTON (By Telegraph— Pr«Sß Association) WELLINGTON, 18th August. Spending most of their energy against the wind in the first spell which produced only a penalty goal, the Wellington Rugby Representatives were unable to stall off a telling rally by Hawkes Bay Ranfurly Shield holders, who won by 18 points to 8, in the in-ter-provincial match played at the Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon' before an attendance of 8000.

The visitors were immeasurably superior in the last fifteen minutes of the game when the Wellington defence was scattered. Wellington were outweighed in the forwards' and this laid the foundation for Hawkes Bay’s suecess. DRAWN GAME AT AUCKLAND ATTRACTIVE FOOTBALL PLAYED AUCKLAND, 18tli August. A young Auckland Rugby team made an improved showing against Wairarapa at Eden Park, a fast even game ending in a draw—l 9 all. Both teams played attractive football, but the Wairarapa forwards outlasted their lighter opponents.

TTMARU, 18th August. Sogth Canterbury beat the touring Canterbury team hv 25 points to 13, before a crowd of 2000. The _ home backs were the deciding factors, in the line of which Gaffaney was the pivot, giving a great display. Gaffaney’s defence was flawless, while he made splendid openings. Trotter at centre gave a brilliant exhibition. The forwards were well matched, but the visiting backs were poor and but for a good defence by Mortlock, the margin would have been greater.

SOUTHLAND SUPERIOR IN GREAT FORWARD STRUGGLE

INVERCARGILL, 18th August. A crowd of 8000 at Rugby Park witnessed a great forward struggle betwen Otago' and Southland, the game resulting in a win for Southland by 9 points to 7. The weather was ideal, but the ground was slightly heavy after rain. Both teams fielded strong packs. Southland’s small margin of generad superiority representing the difference in scores. Though the game was a forward one, play was fast and open throughout The tackling of both sides was a feature.
