WOMEN’S SINGLES UNITED STATES TITLE TITLEHOLDER ENTERS FINAL ! (United Press Association—By Bloctrio Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, 17th August. At Forest Hills, Miss Sarah Palfrey (U.S.A.) defeated Miss Freda James (England), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of tile women’s national championship. Miss Dorothy Andrus (Stamford, Conn.) defeated Baroness Levi, 6-1, 6-4. Miss C. Babcock defeated Miss K. Stammers 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; Miss L. Jacobs defeated Miss E. Ryan 6-0, 6-1.
THE SEMLFINALS NEW YORK, 18th August. At Forest- Hills the Miss Jacobs v. Miss Babcock match offered the only first class tennis of to-day’s semi-finals. Miss Palfrey played far from her best tennis, but still held a wide advantage over the less experienced Miss Andrus. In the first set Miss Babcock played the titlciiolder an on even terms until Miss Jacobs broke through her service in idle twelfth game on hard placements to the corners of the court. In the final set Miss Jacobs played up to true championship form and forced Miss Babcock throughout. In the six games she suffered only thirteen errors, including a doublt-fault. Scores were :
Miss Jacobs defeated Miss Babcock 7-5, 6-0. Miss Pelfrey defeated Miss Andrews 6-3, 6-4.
The final will be played on Sunday.
QUIST AND TURNBULL
LONDON, 18th August. In the tennis tournament semi-finals, Metaxa beat Quist 4-6, 10-8, 6-4; Turnbull beat Von Rohmer 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; Quist and Turnbull beat Maier and Artens 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.
DAVIS CUP MATCHES STOCKHOLM, 17th August. In the second qualifying round of the Davis Cup, Sweden eliminated Ireland by 3 matches to 2. BERLIN, 18th August. Germany has qualified for participation in the Davis Cup in 1935 by eliminating Rumania.
MEN’S DOUBLES FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP COMMENCING PHILADELPHIA, 18th August. Fred Perry and F. D. Wilde are placed first in the foreign seeded list for the United States doubles tennis championship starting on Monday. Vernon Kirby (South Africa) and Goderick Mcnzel (Czechoslovakia) drew second position. Tlie defenders, Lott and Stbefin, topped the United States seeded list.
ALLISON’S SUCCESS NEW YORK, 18th August. At Newport. Allison defeated Frank Barker (Spring Lake, New Jersey) 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 7 -5, winning the Casino singles tournament.
