Sir.—On me way ’ome last jlite, I meets old Tom. an we stops for a bit of a chin wag. ’E says “ have yer bin readin’ the stuff written by ‘Farmer Brown,’ ” and I says, “some of it. I couldn’t stick all of it.” ’E says “wot do yer make of ini?” an’ I says, “well ‘e’s one o’ those clever guys wot ’ides a lot o’ dope in among ’is funny cracks,” an Tom ’e says “jus’ my idea.” Jus’ then Mr Was-’is-name goes past, an ’e says “Good-day”, nice like, so I says, “Mr AVas-is-name, wot do ver think o’ 'Farmer Brown.” ’E says, “Do you refer to the annonymus correspondent recently appearin' in ‘The Mail’?” an’ I says “Yus.” and then ’c says, “Well, in normal times ‘Farnier Brown’s’ foolish flittencys mite to sum simple souls appear amusin,’ but ’is Neroian fiddlins in the present disperito circumstances is mere stupid.” I say. “Thank you,” and wen ’c ’ad gone I says ter Tom “I didn’t quite get ’im, but ’o didn’t seem ter think much o’ ‘Brown did ’c?” an’ Tom says “No; recoiled ’e was in the same clars as the bloke wot tried funny cracks at ’is mother’s funeral,” an’ I says “well wot ’o said about desperit times wasn’t far out, anyway. Farmer Brown ain’t ’elping much with all ’is yap,” and Tom ’c says, “’e don’t miss a charnse o’ trying a crack at ’Arry does ’e?” an’ I says: “No, ’e barks pretty loud when ’c knows the bigger dog ain’t near enough ter bite ’im,” an’ Tom ’c says: “Jus’ so, ’Arry’s doin’ good work anyway, and wot we wants is blokes like ’im wot tries to ’elp,” an’ 1 says “good luck to ’im,” I says. “Like ter see ’im ’ave acrack at Farmer Brown, wouldn’t you?” “an I’om ’c says, “watto ! Wouldn’t be much left o’ old ‘Brown’ afterwards.” An’ I says, “well, ’ooray, see yer 'fomorrer” an off we goes ’ome.—l am, etc. “DICK O’ THE DOLE.” Nelson, 26th April
