THE BOYS’ BRIGADE
NELSON COMPANY FORMED Object: The advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among boys, and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect, and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness. The First Nelson Company of the Boys’ Brigade field their first public parade on Anzac Day. Alany were the enquiries as to who these hoys were. The Boys’ Brigade was founded in Glasgow by' Sir William Smith 51 years ago. Last year the jubilee review held m Queen Park, Glasgow, was attended by His Royal Highness Prince George, who conveyed a message to the hoys from His Majesty the King. Over 30,000 officers and hoys from all parts of the country and representing many lands paraded before His Royal Highness. In tlie last few years over 50 companies have been formed in New Zealand. The work of a company comprises drill, physical training, ambulance work and first aid to the injured, swimming, signalling, knot tying and hoys’ club room. Each parade evening is commenced with a short devotional service. In all branches of the work certificates and badges can be won. Certificates are awarded in the first year to hoys who qualify, and later, on more advanced work badges are awarded, for example: The ambulance certificate is awarded to hoys who gain 50 per cent, of marks in a test. In the following year the ambulance badge is awarded to those who gain 60 per cent, of marks on more advanced work. In the third and fourth year the percentage is raised to 70 per cent, and 80 per cent, respectively. Last year from the First Nelson Company eight boys entered for the ambulance certificate, and six of these qualified. Church parades are held on the first Sunday of every alternate month. Our J next parade will he held on Sunday, 6th May.
