NELSON JOCKEY CLUB

FIRST DAY AT RICHMOND COLLOSICALWINS CUP HAULBOWLINE LEADS ALL WAY IN STEWARDS IMPRESSIVE VICTORY BY LALLA QUEX The first day of tlie Nelson Jockey Club’s Annual Meeting was held in drizzling rain on Saturday and the track at Richmond Park, was slow as a result of overnight rains. Nevertheless the attendance was fair, and the totalisator handled £4602 (one pool) lor seven races against £3793 (win and place) for eight races on the opening day last year. Tho winner of the 53rd Nelson Cup was the much-improved Golossical which is owned and trained by Mr P. A. Findlay at Trentham. The manner in which the Colossus —Brightly .four-year-old came through tho field from last position after a bad start indicated that lie will have further successes before the Nelson-Marlborough circuit is completed. lie was- paraded in 'fine fettle, and was too good for the Blenheim-train-ed and owned Revision, who made a challenge in the' final run up the long straight. Interest was added to the meeting by the presence of K. Voitre, who is close on the heels of L. J. Ellis for the jockey premiership for the 1933-34 season. Prior to Saturday Ellis had 67 wins to his credit and Voitre 60. ' During 'the day tlie latter added a useful three..linore to hjs total by 'piloting CbjftSflmmation, Gold Arrow, and Lalla Qu’ex iiitp first places. Voitre rode the winners of the first two races, and as a result all his mounts were well backed, some being flattered by their order in the favouritism. He missed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth races, then had another successful ride in the final event.

T. R. George’s Blenheim*’stable was

strongly represented at the meeting, only one race not having a starter in it from that source. The stable’s string was Consummation, Pawky, Revision, Bettwsycoed, Nightguard, Miladi, Might, Little Doubt, and fMake Up. Korero and Zionist, who were accepted for were not brought over from Blenheim. Nightguard and Consummation won, Pawky (a promising two-year-old by Rabbi— Roseland), Revision, Miladi, and Little Doubt gained seconds, and three thirds also went to the stable. Consummation and Pawky took first and second places in the Novice Stakes, making only one dividend in a six-horse field. However, they returned only a small price as the bracket was a hot favourite. In the Waimea Handicap, the final event, three of George’s horses were opposed to Lalla Queen, but the New Plymouth mare was too good for them over the mile distance. The winner is in splendid order and will win again shortly among the class she is. meeting on the circuit.

After Haulbowline’s succession of wins on the West Coast it was surprising that he was allowed to go out fourth favourite in a six-horse field in the Stewards’ Handicap sprint. Well-sea-soned by his racing on the West Coast he relished the easy going and won with such a margin that it would appear he has not yet finished his run of successes. The fine condition in which he was turned out was a credit to his trainer, M. Couza, of Greymouth. This year the club dropped the usual two trotting events in favour of seven galloping races, and with the. horses available it was found impossible to maintain two dividend fields in the last two races. In spile of the wet conditions an enjoyable day’s sport resulted. The seven events were run off without any delays, and the last race started only a few minutes after its scheduled time. The public were fairly w--.1l on the mark in selecting the winners, and no large dividends were returned. CUP PRESENTED After the Cup race Colossical was paraded in the bird cage where the president of the club, Mr E. B. Moore, congratulated the owner-trainer of the winner, Mr Findlay, on his success. Mr Moore pointed out that it was disappointing to have a wet day, it being the

first wet Saturday in the last eight months in Nelson. He hoped all patrons would have a pleasant time at the meeting, and that all would return to the fixture next year. Mr Findlay, ho said, owned a fine horse in the cup winner, and he called for cheers for the noise, owner and rider. Mrs Moore, wife o the president, then handed over the trophy to Mr Findlay who briefly thanked Mr Moore for his remarks. The results were as follows: —

(Winner trained by Owner) * " EVENTS DESCRIBED BRACKET TAKES FIRST AND SECOND PLACES The first event saw Mr J. F. D. Corry’s Blenheim-trained bracket Consummation and Pawky come home first and second respectively in a. six horse field. Copena and Zionist were the defections. Consummation and Pawky started best with Weatherzane failing to go off well. Pawky Jed into the straight followed closely by his stablemate with Gayfirp making up ground. Consuinma-

tion headed Pawky a furlong from home and won by half a length. Gayfire finished well into third place a lengtn away. Tho bracket was a hot favourite, and'in spite of only one dividend as a result of their filling first and second places, the dividend was a small one.

GOLD ARROW STILL IN FORM The Hope Hack Handicap saw Gold Arrow add to her West Coast successes with an impressive win carrying 9.6, and she gave K. Voitre his second successive win in’his competition with L. J. Ellis for the jockev premiership for the year. After Imasurvey had made a false break for several chains and returned a good start was effected. Bellbroney went out to the front at tho bend with Gold Arrow, who was installed a warm favourite, second to last. Bellbroney led into the straight with Gold Arrow coming through nicely. Voitre got to work oil Gold Arrow in the straight, and Mr M. R. Spiers’ West Coast mare responded well with a sustained effort which soon disposed of Bellbroney and carried her to the post, two lengths out from Airs A. AI. Farrell’s (Blenheim) four-year-old. Imasurvey was third a length away, and Hunting Call close up fourth. Hunting Call made a reappearance after a long spell, but he is yet very, much on the big side.

CUP TO COLOSSICAL The 53rd Nelson Cup was won bv the Trentham-trained four-year-old Colossical, who was installed first favourite from Revision. Colossical got tho worst of the start from the outside position, and tailed the field past the stand the first time when Zetes was leading from Bettwsycoed. Along the back Bettwsycoed took charge, followed closely by White Doe with Revision second from last. Colossical made a run on the bend approaching the straight, followed through by Revision. This pair wore down Bettwsycoed which led into the straight, and fought out the run to the post where Colossical had half a length’s advantage, with Bettwsycoed in third place a length and a half away. Colossical, ridden by S. Wilson, recovered his disadvantage at the start and finished strongly, while Revision also made a determined run in the straight. The time was 2.11 2-5. Aliladi, Haulbowline, Saltpot and Lalla Quex were the scratchings. •NIGHTGUARD FINISHES STRONGLY

The Talnma Hack Handicap saw Colossical, Gold Arrow and Bay Area scratched, leaving a six-horse field headed by Lovecourt in order of favouritism on account of Voitre being the rider. Gold Sand took Rio lead from the jump out with Purse in close attendance, and Nightguard second to last. At the straight entrance the early leaders fell back, .being replaced by Rose Val on the rails and Tentcall, while Nightguard was making a good run from the back. Nightguard, well ridden by Webster, finished better than anything else to fight out the finish with Rose Val who was half a length behind. Tent Call hung on to gain third place from Gold Sand. The favourite failed to show up. lIAULBOWLINE ALL THE WAY

The West Coaster Haulbowline followed up his consistent winning form on the Coast circuit with an easy victory in the chief sprint event of the day, the Stewards’ Handicap. He jumped out first and led all the way to win by three lengths from the fast finishing Miladi who just beat Arvada by a head for second place. Any doubts about Haulbowline’s ability to handle the long straight were dispelled though Miladi unloosed a dash in the straight after she got clear for a run, but she had no chance against the winner. BAY ACRE BEST OF THREE

A very poor field of three went out for the Electric Hack Handicap, Margaret Rose being favourite. Margaret Rost- and Arrow Rose ran themselves out over the first part and Bay Area came away to win easily by two lengths. LALLA QUEX IMPRESSES Three of the four starters in the final event, the Waimea Handicap of a mile, were from T. George’s stable, the other competitor being Lalla Quex, who was having her first start of the day. Little Doubt, with a reputation in soft going, was installed favourite with Lalla Quex nearly as well fancied. Voitre kept Lalla Quex in behind the three Blenheim horses which were in a line to the straight entrance, and then sent her through to win in impressive style from Little Doubt. A further success should go to Lalla Quex before she returns to to the North Island after the Nelson and Blenheim meeting.
