NELSON JOCKEY CLUB

MEETING OPENS TO-MORROW FIRST DAY’S FIELDS REVIEWED PROSPECTS OF SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE With good acceptances and the Richmond Park track ill splendid order after showers earlier in the week, there is every prospect of the Nelson Jockey Club having a most successful meeting to-morrow and Monday.

The prospects are for line weather and judging by the general interest being taken in the fixture there should be large attendances at Richmond. Seven races are carded, the first event commencing at 1 p.m. and the last at 5 p.m. Special bus and train arrangements have been made for the day. A one pool 10s totalisator will he run with two dividends 5 to S horse races and three dividends for events with 9 or more starters.

The chief event on the programme to-morrow is the 53rcl Nelson Cup, over one mile anil a quarter, for which there are 10 acceptors. The weights are headed by Mrs W. Fuller’s Blen-iicim-tniineil pair Revision and Miladi. Since January Revision has won the Aslihurst and Marlborough Cups, and though Milaili disappointed at Tauhereiiikau at Easter, she should now he approaching her best form anil it is probable this strong bracket will he installed favourites. IJaulbowline lias three wins to his credit on the West Coast circuit, including the Autumn Handicap (hi miles) at Westport and a sprint at Greymoutli, and will have a fair following in the race on this account. Saltpot gained second place in the Easter Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting at the end of March and the Otaki trained horse has improved since then. The West Coaster White Due should he in good form following her West Coast racing during which she just missed the big end of the stake several times. Collosical is a Trcntham-trained four-year-old who will find favour with tlie public. He won the Oroua Hack Handicap Cup at Feilding on Easter Monday, heating Walton Park and Balia Quex, and made a good showing in a trial over the Cup distance at Trentham yesterday morning. Bettwsycoed is the third horse from T. R. George’s Blenheim stable in the race. Two successes came to tin’s three-year-old on the Coast including a mile race at Greymoutli, and she has more than an outside chance. The New Plymouth trained and owned Lalla Quex ran into two third placing® at Feilding and has improved since. Zetes, on the minimum weight, who hails from Reefton, gained a second place at Westport, but will have to improve considerably to get a place in- the field he will he meeting to-morow. Coqmassie, also on the minimum gained two second placings on the Coast anil can mu out a mile and a quarter race. Summed up the field promises a splendid race, with the possibility of an upset in the public’s calculations, with Colossical, Revision-Miladi bracket anil Saltpot appearing to have the best chances.

The programme opens with the Novice Stakes, for horses which have never won a race, over five furlongs. Recent form points to Consummation, Zionist and Copenna.

The Hope hack handicap has drawn a field of eleven, several of which have recent winning form including Gold Arrow, Margaret Rose, Imasurvey, Bcllbroiiey and Battle Queen. Gcild Arrow has been allotted 9.0 on account of recent successes and may he reserved for the Tahuna hack. The public fancies may be Bellbroney, Koreno and Bay Area.

Nine horses were accepted for in the Tahiina Hack Handicap. Colossical would be the first public choice if saved for the race, but the Cup will more probably be bis mission. Of the others Gold Arrow, Gold Sand and Nightguard have good chances. The chief sprint is the Stewards’ Handicap. If Miladi is saved for this event, leaving Revision to uphold Mrs Fuller’s colours in the Cup, she will be fancied in sipte of being awarded 0.0. Those with good chances are Navalio, Aivada, and Miladi. Form in previous events will give a lead to patrons on the Electric Hack Handicap, of six furlongs. Arrow Rose, Bay Area and Purso will be in favour.

The Waimea Handicap, of one mile, which concludes the programme has eight acceptors several of whom will have appeared earlier in the day. This will have a distinct bearing on the choice of the public, but Lai la Quex, Gold Sand and the Makeup-Korero Kofero bracket should run prominently-

NOTES The horses from T. R. George’s Blenheim stable arrived in Nelson by motor float yesterday afternoon and tlie remainder of the North Island contingent, including Bay Area, Misfire, Palace, Lovecourt, Colossical and purse arrived by this morning’s boat from Wellington. Trentham horses for tli e Nelson and Marton meetings did their final work this morning (reports yesterday’s “Post”). The only Nelson candidate to be sent against the watch was Colossical (S. Wilson), who, starting off with Tunbridge (P. Burgess), and picked up by Vitaphonc (G. Ridgway) between tlie five and four furlongs, ran a mile in lmin 47sec, tlie last half in 53sec*. lie did it well all the way, and was always going better than either of his companions, though.ho was eased up near tlie finish, and Vitaplume actually passed the post first. Bay Area, Misfire, Lovecourt, Palace and Purse 41 id pacing and exercise work only, S. Wilson is to ride Bay Area, Misfire, and Purse, S. Ridgway will he on Palace, and probably J. j. McCauley will have the mount on Lovecourt, who is now held on lease by a Lower Hutt sportsman.

Bellbroney, who claims ail engagement in tlie Hope Hack Handicap tomorrow is still shown on tlie records as racing in the interests of her leeseo (Mr A. M. Farnall), though negotiations for her transfer to a Wairarapa sportsman were jn progress duing the recent Wellington Meeting and she actually Avcnt to the Wairarapa for three weeks.

Wcatherzane, an acceptor for the Novice Stakes at Nelson, is the three-year-old half-brother by Wcathervane to 'Tankard, who was formerly trained by J. Fryer at Ha\vera. He was sold by Mr J. IT. G. O’Brien in January to Mr R. J. Hay, of Stoke, Nelson, and lie will be having his first start tomorrow in his new colours. Haulbowline, who was one of the

best performed horses on tlm recent West Coast circuit, is now in M. Conza’s stable at Greymouth. Mrs C. Perano sold him to his trainer, T. It. George, in January, and a few days later George passed him on to Mr G. Linton, for whom he has already won three races in six- starts, being deprived of a fourth win because of weighing in short.

Trentham’s only novice candidate at the Nelson meeting will be the three-year-old Itoyal Shot—Misgovern gelding Misfire, whom A. Goodman is training for Mr S. J. Maher. When first broken in this gelding showed a good turn of pace, hut he had to be eased off later and only recently reappeared on the final day at Tauherenikau, where he ran a creditable fifth, finishing well. Gold Arrow owes her high nlace in the Nelson handicaps to her recent successes on the West Coast. She won a double at Hokitika, was narrowly beaten by the consistent Quietly (in receipt of Jib) on one of the days at Greymouth, and was a winner again at Recfton. She is a five-year-old Arrow-smith-Misland marc, and is owned by her breeder, Mr M. It. Spiers. It is interesting to note that, though Little Doubt recently won the Westport Cup and the Irving Memorial at Recfton, both over 1 : } miles, his lessee T. R. George nominated him for the mile Waimca Handicap in preference to the Nelson Cup. The reason, of course, may have, been the difficulty in satisfactorily placing all his many horses in the various events, for Revision and Miladi are a solid pair in themselves for the Cup. At Recfton, Little Doubt, beside winning the 1} mile event, also scored over seven furlongs in the Farewell Handicap.

There was activity at the Richmond track this morning when most of the visitors were given exercise and other tasks.
