BEAVERS AND MUSKRATS
INTRODUCTION TO DOMINION MINISTER DEFINITELY OPPOSED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON 'This Day. On several occasions representations have been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. A. Young, to allow the introduction, of beavers and muskrats into the Dominion. The Minister states that h,. is definitely opposed to such suggestions, as he regards those animals as pests. “The beaver is certainly to be admired for its ingenuity,” said the Minister, “bill it is not hard to visualise the havoc which it would cause in sonic of our swamp drainage or river protection areas if it became established. “ The introduction of the muskrat is desired Because from it the much fancied musquash fur is obtained. The muskrat is ji prolific breeder. Two, three and occasionally four or five litters, ayeraging six or seven young each, are produced in a season, so that it is not difficult to visualise the possihilty of the country being overrun y ith these animals in suitable localities if their introduction is authorsed.”
