CESSATION OF GRANT STATEMENT BY COUNCIL CHAIRMAN (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Hay. Commenting at a recent meeting of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on the effect of the cessation of the Empire Marketing Board’s grant, the chairman, Mr Shirteiiff, said it would seem that tlie available funds should be conserved for the purpose of maintaining such fundamental researches as play an all-important part in the development of the Dominion’s natural resources . In this class would he. placed plant research, soil survey, and animal health and nutrition. On tlie other hand .research which \vas done for particular industries should he financed for tho most part by the industries themselves, viz., dairy, fruit, wheat, leather, gold, fuel, etc. Referring to the desirableness of modifying the policies in various research activities as.circumstances of the times warrant, Mr Shirtliffe, remarked that in (lie primary products quantitative expansion seemed at present to require halting, and energies directed towards improvement in quality.
