ONE-PRICE STORES

CAUSE OF TROUBLE IN PARIS PARIS, 26th March. Violent demonstrations took place yesterday when a new “one-price’ store was opened. No sooner had the doors been thrown open than an angry crowd swarmed in, threw part of the stock on the floor, attacked the staff and kept on shouting, “Down with all one-price stores.” The demonstrators were mostly small shopkeepers who felt that their living was threatened by competition from the “one-price” stores. During the whole evening a great crowd stood about in front of the store in a threatening attitude. Just before the Chamber of Deputies adjourned, a law was passed providing for tlie closure, of all “one-price” stores within three months. This law. however, still requires the consent of the Senate which at present is disinclined to give approval.
