THE NELSON CASE
A MAU BUDGET read IN COURT (United Press Association-By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) APIA, 20th December. The hearing of the Nelson case was resumed to-day when Supenntendynt Braisby continued his evidence and was still in the box when the court adjourned at 3.150 p.m. Among the exhibits seized at Nelson’s residence was a Mau budget prepared and written by Nelson- a fact admitted by the defence—which contained: Receipts for tax paid by natives, £2400, lines collected £IOO. total £2,500, less the amount retained for village committees £500; leaving a total of £2OOO. Contributions received: For tho Womens Mau £IOO. Samoa “Guardian” £IOO, total receipts £2200. On the expenditure side: Samoa “Guardian” £SOO, chief secretary £OO, assistant-secretary £4a. office stationery £55, transport £4O, tho president £IOO, eleven ministers £2OO, retainers £IOO, faipiiles £484, village secretaries £132; maintenance of the"capital at Vaimoso £344; total expenditure £2,000; tho balance remaining £2OO. There is an error of £OO in the total expenditure of these figures as shown on the exhibits. DEFENDING COUNSEL WITHDRAW'S (Received 22nd December. 11.10 a.m.) APIA, 22nd December. Owing to a difference of opinion between Nelson and Mr Klinkmueller, counsel for accused, as to how tho case should he conducted, Mr Klinknniellcr asked the permission of the Court to withdraw from the case. Nelson will now conduct his own case. A further adjournment was granted till the 27th December. DEALING WITH SEDITION ACTION BY GOVERNMENT An order gazetted decrees it will be unlawful for any person to have in his possession for the purpose of sale or distribution in Samoa any seditious newspaper printed in the Samoan language or partly in that language. A seditious newspaper is defined as any newspaper which incites, encourages, advises, or advocates violence, lawlessness, disorder or expresses any seditious intention, or mis* represents or tends to bring into hatred or contempt the Parliament or Executive Government of New Zealand or the administration of the public service of the territory by intemperate language, malicious or reckless criticism, or otherwise tends to interfere with the peace and order or good government of the territory. It includes every issue of any newspaper which the Administrator shall by notice in the “Gazette” declare to he a seditious newspaper, whether printed before or fater such notice and within or without the territory.
