The Matriculation
CRITICISM OF THIS YEAR’S PAPERS Adverse criticism of some of this year’s matriculation examination papers was passed at the speech day ceremony of St. Andrews College, (liristchurcli,- by the headmaster, Mi A K. Anderson ALA. (reports the “Press”). After referring to the recent institution of the school certificate examination, and stating that (he university could now fairly raise the standard to be reached before a pupil could matriculate, Mr Anderson said that standard seemed to have been unfairly and prematurely raised this year. “This year’s papers in French and history were definitely too severe,” continued Air Anderson. “Competent teachers have rightly criticised the French test. Most candidates who take French must pass in the subject to assure the complete examination. The French paper was one of the lirst this year, and the result of the unexpected severity of the paper was to upset candid, ktes in the papers that followed. The system of ' scaling marks will no doubt operate in French, hut even tins will not counteract the disturbing eil'cet of what has been justifiably termed an unfair paper.”
