CLAIM FOR DEATH DUTIES

ASSESSMENT UPHELD LATE SIR G. CLIFFORD’S ESTATE [Bv Telegraph—Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. An appeal from the decision of the Commissioner of Taxes in assessing for death duties part of the estate of the late Sir George Clifford, was determined by Mr Justice Ostler today. The trustees under the will were the appellants, and claimed that a portion of Sir George Clifford’s estate, his interest in the Flaxbourne property, had been wrongly assessed for death duties, because as they claimed, this property had been transferred to his son Charles, now Sir Charles Clifford, during his father's lifetime. His Honour held that the trustees had proved only that testator had handed over the indome to his son, and had declared his intention to make tue gift. The appeal was dismissed with 12 guineas costs.
