THE WRONG MAN
DAMAGES FOR SLANDER (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. Damages amounting to £ls and costs were awarded by Mr Stilwell, S.M., today against J. T. Owen in a slander action brought by T. 11. Jolmston. Plaintiff alleged that defendant used words in the public bearing on sth September, “I see tliev put you in gaol for stealing fruit. That’s where they ought to keep you.” Plaintiff bad not been in gaoi, but another man of the same name had been before, the Court for stealing fruit from an auction mart.
