IN THE UKRAINE
(To the Editor] Sir,—Some time a'go you published a statement to the effect that in Russia in the Ukraine .starvation was so rampant that corpses were to be seen in every direction, and affairs were so bad that cannibalism was resorted to. Since you printed this statement I now ask you to print the rebuttal of it. First, by a French statesman named Herriot, who was in Russia at the time on diplomatic business. At bis own request he was taken to this district where these horrors were said to bo taking place, and be says, “I saw nothing but prosperity.” An Englishman, John Jaggers, of Fallowfield, Manchester, spent some days in the city of Kiev, and this is his report on his return to England: “I did not see any corpses in the market place or any other part of the city although I travelled about it pretty extensively, visit-
ing a large cinematograph studio, a hos--1 iery factory, an ironworks with over 3000 I workers, the Kiev co-operative societies, and the Palace of Labour. I did, however, see an Olympiad demonstration of ' over 20,000 workers all in running eostumes and sandals, and if any of these e scantily-clad young people had been suf- ’ fering from the effects of famine it ? would have been difficult for me to avoid , noticing it. 1 was also present at a ' meeting of 2,000 people at the Palace of 'j Labour which was addressed by the • Committee of Food, but even here 1 r heard no word of famine, and saw no y symptoms of under feeding. On the a contrary, I dined with the workers at i the Kiev ironworks in their communal II dining room, and found the food excele lent, but much too generous for a sedeuworker like myself.”—l am, etc. a ’ J. W. WIN. 28th November.
