TRANSPORT AMALGAMATION
[To the Editor] Sir,—During the sitting of the No. 7 Licensing Authority the chairman, Dr. S. A. Gibbs, when addressing applicants for goods services concluded by reiterating that he hoped owners would endeavour to come to some system of amalgamation or co-ordination. We fully realise that motor lorries operating in the fruit areas are very busy during the fruit season, January to June, but during the winter months the business offering is considerably less. Would the chairman, Dr. Gibbs, advise the position which would arise should say three owners amalgamate. During the winter months it would not be necessary to operate all the trucks, one or two could be left in the garage, and perhaps two trucks would cope with the winter work. By leaving two trucks in the garage during the winter would naturally make them seasonal licenses operating during the fruit season. This system would pay better than at present when we run all the trucks for only half loads. What would happen if at some future date it was found necessary to bring out one of the seasonal trucks to operate during the winter on account of additional business? Would the Authority allow the seasonal license to be extended ? It is fully realised business expands with prosperous times and we all hope prosperity is not far distant.—l am etc., AMALGAMATION. Nelson.
