SAFETY MEASURES

RISKS OF THE ROAD MOTORISTS’ RESOLUTIONS (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, 18th August. At the annual conference of the North Island Motor Union, which concluded to-day, it was decided to recommend to the executive that representations be made to have legislation passed for the protection of persons injured by unlicensed motor-vehicles which, under the circumstances, would not be covered by the compulsory third-party insurance. * Delegates from Taranaki mentioned tile need for additional safeguards, on some of the smaller railway . engines and also on railway jiggers. While expresses had powerful headlights many other engines were inadequately lighted, and railway jiggers were not provided with warning devices. The conference agreed that representations on the subject should be made to the Railway Department. Mr G. W. Hutchison (Auckland) .raised the question of the danger to motor

traffic when stock was driven on main highways at night, and suggested that greater safeguards would be in the. interests of drovers as well as motorists. The matter was referred to the executive.
