SOME UNSEEMLY BEHAVIOUR
GATHERINGS IN DUNEDIN TOWN i■ . HALL COMPLAINTS TO COUNCIL DUNEDIN*) lfitli August. Some criticism of the conduct of recent public gatherings in the Dunedin Town Hall has been voiced during the last few days, add was the subject of a brief reference at the meeting of the City Council to-night (reports the Christchurch “Press” correspondent) When the report of the finance committee was under discussion, Councillor J. B. Shacklock asked if the attention of the chairman of the committee, Councillor Allen, had been drawn to unseemly behaviour at certain recent entertainments at the Town Hall. Councillor Shacklock said that the matter had certainly under his own ontice, and if the reports he had heard were true, he thought steps should he taken to see that such behaviour was not repeated. Councillor 11. C. Campbell: Quite riglit.
Councillor Allen said liis attention liud been drawn to unseemly conduct at entertainments and dances at the Town Hall on two or three recent occasions. The committee allowed a limited quantity of liquor to he taken to these entertainments under supervision. It was very difficult, however, for the City Corporation ollicials to control the behaviour of adults at these entertainments. If persons continued to abuse the privilege granted them the committee would bn compelled to withdraw it. The attention of the police could be called to the matter; but unfortunately liquor was not always consumed in the Town Hall. There was drinking in motor-cars outside the building, and this was purely a matter for the police. Now that the attention of the committee hud been called to the matter, if would be doubly careful when it issued a license.
