CONCERT AND PRESENTATION OF MEDALS A concert, organised by Miss Scotter and the girls of the secondary department, Motucka District High School, was held in Bowers’ Sample Boom yesterday. The large audience of parents, friends ancl pupils, who attended, thoroughly enjoyed the varied p|-o-grame of songs, recitations, dancing and plays, presented by the girls. Mr Rochfort (headmaster), in his opening remarks, explained that the concert was in aid of the school sports fund; ancl that opportunity would be taken to present the dux medals at this function. He thanked all present for their support, stating that the school was always in need of funds. He felt sure, however, that parents did not grudge their contributions to help the school in any way. They could he certain of the fact that the money would always be well-spent. Before asking Mr L. Manoy to present tlie dux medal for the primary school, Mr Rochfort stated that Mr Manoy had donated a medal eah year since 1917 for this department. Mr Manov, in presenting the medal for the year' 1932 to Thelma Cain, said that he had noticed on looking on the roll of honour, that seven girls had been winners ancl eight boys. He liad donated the medals with the idea of helping the school in some small way; and thought it would encourage the children to work hard for a place of honour. He congratulated the winnei on this occasion and hoped she would continue to be successful. Three clieeis were called for Mr Manoy. Mr Rochfort said they were very grateful to Mr Manoy for presenting a dux medal year after year. Another medal, for the dux of the secondary department, was given by Mr Eric Trevena, a former chairman of the Moteuka School Committee and member of tlie Education Board, In the absence of Mr Spencer Smith, lie would call upon Mr Carling, Education Board member, to present this medal. Mr Carling stated that it was most appropriate that Mr Rochfort should ask him to present the secondary dux medal. If it had not been Mr Trevena’s wish that he (Mr Carling) should succeed him, he would not have left the seclusion of Tasman. He was pleased that the people of Motueka had allowed him to don Mr Trevena’s mantle and continue his work on the Board. It was with great pleasure that he presented the medal, on behalf of Mr Trevena, to Ena Fawcett, lie congratulated her and expressed the hope that she would have many happy days before her and continue her .earning after school clays were over. Mr Rochfort called for three cheers for Mr Trevena for his great generosity in donating the modal, after he had left the district; and three cheers for Mr Carling for acting in his place. As far as he knew there was no medal available for the present year 1933, unless some public spirited person m ■ Motueka would come forward and donate one. He informed the pupils that the school committee had granted them a holiday on Friday in recogm- . tion of the work done by the school in raising funds by means of tlieir bazaar. • The programme was as follows: pianoforte solo, Joan Cooke; recitation, , Peggy McGlaslicn; folk dances (Maxim., - and Dargason); Pantomine “The Pnn- - cess in the Tower” (a cautionary tale > for unsmypathetic parents); song, , “Little Old Church of My Dreams”, , Peggy MeGlashen; tap dance, Eleanor f Grimstone; old English songs “Bow 3 Down,” “I’ll sing jtfu one,” “Green 1 grow the rushes ho,” “Iklcley Moor, t “John Braclclleum”; play, Nicholas - Niclcelby (Mr Squeers, Ena Fawcett; f Mrs Squeers.
