The No. 7 Licensing Authority—Dr. S. A. Gibbs, chairman, and Messrs J. Hannan aiid W. T. Churchward—continued its sitting yesterday afternoon to deal with applications for goods services licenses. Mr Brittenden represented the Railway Department, j The application of C. J. Emms (Takaka) was re-opened, and the route license was amended to Collingwood-Nel-son instead of Purimaho to Nelson, j In regard to the application of Stewart and Haswell (Westland) Mr Moynagh for applicant said an agreement had been come to with the Railway Department on certain matters. The license will be finally dealt with at the Greymouth siti ting of the Authority. | The following further licenses were approved : J. A. Stuchberry (Rugby Bay); . A. A. and M. A. Kenyon (Nelson), with the railway restriction as to picking up goods within two miles of Wakefield station; V. H. J. Tomlinson (Tapawera), (subject to railway restrictions); P. N. Tomlinson (Ngatimoti); R. A. Higgins (Foxliill); Best Bros. (Nelson); E. L. Newport and Sons (Kor’ere); L. G. Wakefield IMapua); R. M. Shirtliff (Appleby); Hodgson and Son (Murchison); L. G. Watson (Thorpe). Several of the applications were amended before being approved. The application of H. and R. Stratford j (Hope) was deferred for consideration. ! The meeting adjourned at 5.45 p.m. ; until this morning. j The application of E. F. White (Murchison) was adjourned to Greymouth; and the application of W. V. Snow (Nelson) was deferred for consideration. TODAY’S PROCEEDINGS On the application of Mr C. M. Rout the license of Best Bros., granted yesterday, was‘slightly amended. APPLICATIONS OBJECTED TO % [ Tile hearing of the application of D. • McPherson (Wakefield) was continued, jMr C. M. Rout appeared for tile appli- ■! cant.

The route licenses Nelson-Inangahua and Wakefield to foot of Takaka hills, with necessary deviations, were not objected to / Objections were made to. the area license applied for covering Stoke and Wai-iti ridings and part of tlie Motupiko riding as far south as Spooner’s range. Air Brittinden, of the Railway Department, asked for restrictions between Belgrove and Nelson.

I Mr' Rout said the service had been I running for two years, and his client was ! therefore entitled to an automatic license. • I Mr Brittenden said lie was making an effort to save a little traffic for the railway and and save it for the people. The Railway Department desired to keep the section open if possible to do so, and he had been working along that line in an endeavour to conserve some of the inter- . ests lying aside the railway. ! Regarding an area license covering the Aloutere riding, and the Motueka riding to the north-west portion of tile Appleby riding extending to the Waimea river, an automatic license was applied for. Mr Spencer Smith, on behalf of Motueka carriers objected to the application. In reply to a question, applicant said lie.had not picked up apples in Riwaka or the Motueka riding prior to November, 1931, ■ for Inagaliua, but ho was catering'for the business. He had been cartingAease, timber, hcivyev-ter, into the?Histricta- Applicant gave -’Hie names of two orchards m the Aloutere riding t j where, lie. had picked up fruit for the j same destination. He was objecting to i the application of Funnel and Co. for ,a j through service to Inangahua. He could ! adequately cope with the ‘ needs of the district with his trucks. Mr Smith pointed out that on Wednes- | day applicant said he had liad the asj sistance of two other drivers, who were j now not operating in the district. Mr Rout said lie understood that two drivers concerned were still operating in the area. The Authority pointed out that one of the drivers was still operating over a considerable portion of tlie area involved, j Air Smitli said his point was that the applicant could not obtain assistance from the two lorries to cart fruit in the I Motueka ridipg and a portion of TasIman. ' ' ’ | In answer to the chairman Mr Smith said the grounds for his objection were that the service was not adequate to the needs of the district, and that applicant had not established his right to an automatic license. Mr Rout said if desired lie could call further evidence to prove that applicant wa-s carrying goods in the area concerned prior to November, 1931. In answer to the chairman, applicant said he had been carting for the Fruitgrowers Federation quite a lot. The chairman said he had been informed that the Fruitgrowers’ Federation would have 40,000 cases of fruit to handle next season for Inangahua, and it was therefore quite evident that one -firm could not handle the lot. n Air Rout intimated that he would withdraw his objection to Funnel and Co.’s application. Consideration. was deferred. The application of A. J. AlcCaa (Murchison) for route licenses from Alurcliison to Westport and from Murchison to Glenhope, with certain deviations, was next called. Air C. M. Rout appeared for the applicant. Mr Fell, on behalf of Spiers and Sons, objected to the application. Mr Rout admitted applicant was not entitled to an automatic license between Gowan and Glenhope, for which a new license was being applied for. Other- '■ wise lie was entitlecf to automatic licenses.

Applicant gave evidence in support of his application. Mr Fell questioned applicant at some length regarding prices charged for freight, and whether the cut prices he made were economical. Applicant contended they were. Other objections were withdrawn, but it was intimated that the question of a minimum freight rate should be fixed for all services. Consideration was deferred.
