BOXING

TO-NIGHT’S TOURNAMENT AT THEATRE ROYAL It is pleasing to see that the Nelson Boxing and Pastime Association has decided to hold a tournament and there should be a large attendance at the Theatre Royal to-night. Judging by the bouts arranged to-night’s programme should provide the best boxing seen in Nelson for some time. The star bout of the evening will be between Soames and Dombroski. Soames was the runner-up for the New Zealand middleweight championship in 1932, having fought a very close decision with Roguski, the holder. His opponent on this occasion is the 1928 New /Zealand middle and welter champion. This is Dombroski’s first appearance in Nelson and bis meeting with Soames should provide some exciting ringwork. “Ginger” Waide of Nelson is matched with Shorrocks of Westport, the Coast champion. This bout should prove a very hard contest. Waide seen working out in the local gymnasium looks in the pink of condition. Shorrocks is a seasoned boxer and is fast and speedy with a strong straight left. This should be a fast, hard contest. ■ Through E. Thomas being indisposed Schofield, an ex-Canterbury champion, who some years ago had a "fight in Nelson, is going to be P. Raynor’s (Blenheim) opponent. Raynor is the Marlborough champion, and is a fast twohanded fighter. Schofield has experience and age, but Raynor has speed and science and will make Scholfield use all his ability to keep him away. J. Barker, the Nelson school champion has taken to the game seriously, and is to meet Comeford of Westport. In Confeford, Barker has a fast boxer to fight, but if he shows the same form as he did against R. Waide at the school championships he should win the decision.

R. Waide is now developing into a good clean boxer, and will be a hard proposition for any boy his own weight. His fight with Smith (Puponga) will he an interesting match as this hoy is as last as Waide, and has several decisions in his credit. if K. Thomas, Nelson shows the promise he did with Goodman lie will he a hard proposition for Webby who is a new man here from Murchison. Hawkins (Westport) will make Ted Pry do his best. Hawkins has a nice left and is speedy. If Fry boxes as lie did with F. Waide in their last match he should about earn the decision. The team from Murchison is a good one and all are expected to perform well. A. Chapman is a big strong boy, with a hard punch in both hands. However Ford will make him do his best. Mantle is hick in the game and is to fight T. Troy, from Wellington. Troy is a likely looking lad and will make Mantle do his best. Fitzgerald (Motueka) and Smith (Puponga) look like providing a good fight. Smith is a fast two-handed boxer, and is very scientific. He will be matched against a boxer who goes from gong to gong. ♦

Ballantyne and Hendra should make a rather good match and all considered to-night’s bouts should make a fine night’s entertainment. FRANKLIN BEATS CARIRIG (By Telegraph—Press Association) MASTERTON, This Day. In a ten rounds professional featherweight boxing match J. Franklin (Gisborne) Bst 101 b, defeated E. Carrig (Mastevton), Bst 111 b. The bout went the full distance, but Franklin was clearly superior and punished his opponent severely. Carrig was gameness personified, but though he scored nicely at times he was generally outclassed.
