WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING ADDITIONAL BUSINESS TRANSACTED, The monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council was concluded yesterday afternoon. TENDERS Two tenders were received for the construction of the Dove bridge, that of C. O’Brien, the lowest, at ,1.904 ,‘Js 9d being accepted. CORRESPONDENCE In reply to a letter from Mr Russ, it was resolved to notify the writers that no funds were available to repair Lublow’s ford. * The Public Works Department, notified that plans and estimates had been finished for the Pokororo Bridge, and asked the Council to consent to its quota of £495 being increased if extras or unforeseen circumstances arose. It was resolved to give consent. A letter from the Healtli Department as to tile erection of future buildings at Kaiteriteri, was tiled for reference. An application from the Conservator of Forests for the supply of culvert pipes for Golden Downs road was referred to the engineer. The New Zealand Counties Association asked the council to carefully survey the whole of the local authorities operating in its own and contiguous localities with the view to ascertaining whether some reduction could not well be made in tile number. It was resolved to convene a meeting of delegates of various local bodies within the county. The chairman and Councillor Horatio Everett were appointed the council’s delegates. In reply to a communication from tliet Marlborough County Council it was resolved to hold a conference to classify roads. A letter from the South Island Tourist League was referred to the Progress League. An application by Air S. Rowling for exemption from the provisions of the Public Works Act of a portion of the wharf road frontage, Kaiteriteri was agreed to. A sum of 14s was granted the Wakapuaka Farmers’ Union for the destruction of small birds.
An application from Mr J. W. Cribble for permission to erect a kerbside pump was referred to the engineer.
Permission to cross the road with a private telephone line was granted to to Mr S. H. Simpson. The offer of Mr E. Harford, Wakefield to purchase a winch was declined. The Motupiko-Korere branch of the Farmers’ Union .forwarded suggestions for improving had dips on the main highway. It was resolved to refer the matter to the engineer for consideration. A letter from Mr S. Hannon, Tui, as to woodwork was referred to the engineer. Permission was granted to Mr Charles Barrow. Umukiui, to gather firewood on Canaan road at a charge of "2s a cord. As to rubbish on roadside, Moutere Lagoon road, complained of by the Motuekn Harbour Board, it was resolved to refer the matter to the engineer for action. It. was resolved to instruct the dogtax collector to prosecute the owner of a dog who refused to register it.
GENERAL It was resolved that the next meeting' of the council be held on 7th April. The chairman (Councillor Corder) moved according to notice that the resolution regarding the sale of firewood from Rabbit Island and Rough Island be rescinded. The motion was carried. A formal resolution was passed approving of the legalisation of a new road and closing the old road, Gordon Creek, Golden Downs. It was resolved to accept the offer of Air and Mrs Bell to sell land for £lO for the widening of Saxton’s road, Stoke. Councillor Kenyon said his attention had been drawn to a patch of ragwort on the roadside in Dovedale. The engineer was instructed to take action. Councillor Higgins again brought up the question of getting the Topliouse road declared a main highway. To this end it might be worth taking a traffic tally. It was agreed that this be done. On the suggestion of Councillor Herbert Everett a sub-committee was set U]) to bring down a draft report in the classification of roads. He was satisfied that the roads in some instances were not classified properly-. Councillor Higgins agreed with Councillor H. Everett. Councillor Horatio Everett said the | question had come up on previous occasions, but perhaps it was time the matter was reviewed. The chairman also agreed that the matter should be discussed. The Committee appointed was the chairman and Councillors Teece and Horatio Everett. The council then adjourned.
